This is a fine fossil fish. It is a large Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and has good detail preserved. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined - the eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the upturned mouth adds a certain charm. The orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well showcased on the squared plate of shale. This is a nice, large example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
