Here is a very distinct fossil fish. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This specimen was found by Steve Hess in 2008. The fish exhibits wonderful detail - the eye socket is easily seen, and the bone structure is well preserved. The fins of the fish are clearly defined, and even some of the the scale pattern is noticeable. The fish has great, orangish-brown color that contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fish is well showcased on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a very nice example of a large fossil herring from the Eocene.
